27 Apr 2025

A masterful showcase of our beloved organ.

On the 27th of April, the Cathedral had the privilege of hosting Liesel Murphy, who gave a recital of “Grand organ music of the centuries”. And grand it certainly was!

Liesel’s gentle and expressive playing brought new life to many well-loved pieces, and her mastery of the instrument was evident in her precise and delicate performance. The various moods of the Cathedral’s “grand old lady” were showcased, including agile playing of Bach and Buxtehude, masterful use of registration in the Elegy by Sir George Thalben-Ball and a grand finale of Louis Vierne’s Carillon de Westminster using the full organ.

This most recent instalment of the Bicentenary Concert Series marks the start of music in the Cathedral every Sunday at 17:00 up until Michaelmas. The third Sunday of every month will be a concert, with Evensong or another choral treat scheduled for every other Sunday. Choral Compline will also be sung on the eve of the third Sunday of the month, as well as the Choral Eucharist every Sunday morning.

The next recital will be on the 18th of May, where Christopher Cockburn will be performing an organ concert entitled Bach and the 19th Century.
